When in April 1970 on the Beira Patrol, we received a signal 'to proceed with utmost dispatch' to a position in the Indian Ocean, i.e. burn everything in the boilers do the job but please can we have some of the ship back. This being a black spot for on line communications and before satellites, we had to take down the instructions in pencil by morse code. The Americans could not send morse so they sent it from Houston to Halifax Nova Scotia for the Canadians to send. Houston had a problem, Apollo 13 had a major problem, and we with a WASP and a box brownie camera were the long stop for two American Aircraft groups with full TV cameras in the Pacific. The film the 'Yangsee Incident' had been shown on board and the chefs realised their duty. Herrings in Tomato sauce were required for the sparkers. Regrettably our boys had different tastes to HMS Amethyst and the sandwiches had to be quietly disposed of. Luckily we weren't required and the space craft was rescued with full TV coverage. We didn't have to burn everything in the boilers before meeting our tanker and resuming our watch. |
