Fri March 26th Ship Commissioned John Brown's Shipyard. The
ship sailed through a typhoon in the China Sea where a
number of American ships were lost and some of our own ships
were damaged, particularly the carriers On our immediate
arrival in Hong Kong Naval Architects came onboard and found
several large cracks where the upper deck joined with the
bridge superstructure, just aft of the turret. These
defects were quickly welded up. Visit Colombo, Ceylon and

Iraq was going to cross the border into Kuwait. At that time
Kuwait was under British protection. The Iraqis backed
off. We were there for about 2.5 months. It was nice and
warm as those on board will remember. No Air-conditioning
then, unless you were on the bridge, in the wardroom, or the
officers cabins. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Commander "E" decided to hold a "Nuclear" war exercise, so
after sweating it out for 2.5 months we were all shut down
for a day. No fans, water tight doors shut, all at action
stations. |

|
|
|
|
After the all clear, "Phew" made it!! we made our way to
Mombassa. On the way I was invited down to the DO'S cabin,
mercy!! Lt.: Phillips from memory I can remember the visit
quite clearly. There he was sat down with his greatcoat on
as the Air-conditioning was at + 18c where I was at + 35c
with my boiler suit on (after coming off watch) he asked me
if I wanted to sign on. |

We limped back to Rosyth again only to find that on arrival,
the boilermakers had been rushed over to Faslane to carry
out emergency repairs on a Leander frigate that had been
badly damaged during a tour of duty in the seas around
Iceland. |

We were ordered to make our way from Rosyth to Faslane
(over the top). The weather / seas were awful and by the
time we finally got to Faslane the boilermakers had all gone
back to Rosyth. Our skipper refused to go back over the top
and we were eventually diverted to Birkenhead. |
